About

Matteo Ricci
The cultural and missionary work inaugurated by Matteo Ricci, SJ (1552-1610) in Ming China (1368-1644) offered the hope of a brand of intercultural dialogue founded on the belief of the universality of the human experience and possibility of mutual understanding between cultures.  Drawing on the scholarly activity at Saint Louis University in the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Departments of History, Theological Studies, and Philosophy, the Center for Intercultural Studies, and the Center for International Studies, the "Matteo Ricci Speaker Series” explores issues crucial to China studies, as well as to inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue.  The Speaker Series extends from 2014-2018, and celebrates both the bicentenaries of the restoration of the Society of Jesus in 1814 and the Foundation of Saint Louis University in 1818.

The Series hosts international scholars whose groundbreaking research ranges across the fields of social-cultural and intellectual history, comparative theology and religions, ethics, philosophy, literature, and art history. The talks touch upon cardinal principles of the Jesuit educational mission as well as sensitive themes in the current encounters between China and the West. They not only address students and faculty across a breadth of fields at Saint Louis University, but also the intellectual community in the Greater St. Louis area, its citizens, and all those who are interested in international cooperation and intercultural exchange at all levels. The ultimate goal of the "Matteo Ricci Speakers Series" is to reinforce the relationship of Saint Louis University with its Jesuit mission and intellectual tradition while promoting intercultural and inter-religious East-West dialogue.

The series is organized around four themes: I) The Missionary and Intercultural Experiences; II) Ethics and Inter-religious Dialogue; III) Christianity and Comparative Literature; and IV) The Jesuits, the Arts, and the Sciences in China.
